What It Is: I’ve been reading a lot about sustainable fishing and along the way, came across this interesting brand, Tidal Vision. In a nutshell, we as Westerners don’t actually use a whole lot of the animals we kill to eat – cow leather is a notable exception although oftentimes it may come from a type of cattle raised just for leather purposes. The same goes for fish.
In order to help sustainable fisheries maximize the value of what they do catch (which is significantly lower than mass fishing companies), innovators like those at Tidal Vision are finding new ways to use their byproducts. One such innovation? Turning salmon skin into leather. Available in a range of different hues, these unique ‘leather’ products are surprisingly sturdy – and quite appealing to look at, with a similar vibe to snakeskin. They’ve applied their salmon leather to a range of applications, including belts, a smartphone wallet, and a range of change purses / wallets. Quirky and eco-friendly? What’s not to love?
Who It’s For: Your fishing-obsessed friend, as a cool birthday gift. Your eco-friendly sibling, as a conversation starter for whenever they’re paying for something. Your fashionista mom, who will love spreading the word amongst her friends.
What It Costs: Prices start at $47 USD.
Where It’s At: The Tidal Vision store.
